Wildfire crews say BC’s largest active wildfire is now within 8 kilometres of Hudson’s Hope, and 4 from the WAC Bennett Dam.
That fire sparked in Battleship Mountain, just west of Hudson’s Hope, two weeks ago, and is now covering nearly 30,000 hectares.
Evacuation orders issued for the community and the surrounding area are covering more than 1,000 residents, with most being told to head to Fort St John.
That makes the fire the only active blaze in BC prompting evacuation orders, with its smoke also to blame for air quality statements in the Peace Region and South Cariboo.
In addition to the WAC Bennett Dam, the blaze is also threatening BC Hydro’s Peace Canyon facility, which combined provide a third of BC’s hydro.
But they also say that, despite the closing proximity, none of their infrastructure is at risk, and limited staff are remaining on site to ensure critical operations continue.
