After 5 years of lobbying, the Fort Nelson First Nation has secured one of the largest First Nation forest tenures commitments ever made.
Covering a combined 1.26 million cubic metres per year, the tenures are split across a number of individual licenses.
Those licenses are structured to allow the Nation, and partner Peak Renewables Limited, to construct and operate a new pellet plant, capable of processing 600,000 metric tonnes annually.
All tenures in the area are subject to the Nation’s Land Management Framework, which protects traditional values, wildlife habitats, old growth, and sustainability.
But the licenses won’t be finalized until substantial completion on the pellet plant construction, which cannot begin until upgrades on the railroad are performed.
A coalition involving the project partners is currently being formed to upgrade the railway.
