Policing in Indigenous communities took centre stage this morning as the final day of the BC Assembly of First Nations Annual General Assembly got underway.
An address by RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald got things going following opening blessings.
McDonald says the RCMP are working to revamp their de-escalation model to lessen police intervention in calls, including wellness checks, in Indigenous communities.
He added that they are increasing awareness and sensitivity training, and are committed to fostering Indigenous-led, culturally-informed, relationships.
His speech came alongside a resolution to sign a draft Cooperation Protocol between the members of the First Nations Leadership Council, RCMP, and BC Association of Municipal Chiefs.
Developed by the FNLC, the protocol establishes a process for joint dialogue, action, and cooperation on promoting safe and resilient First Nations communities, while respecting their rights.
