In-person meetings between the Tŝilhqot’in National Government and the province are continuing this week.
Negotiations between the pair have been on-going since the landmark Tŝilhqot’in Decision in 2014, but were forced to go virtual due to the pandemic.
That Supreme Court decision saw the Tŝilhqot’in gain Aboriginal Title Rights over 1,900 square kilometres in the Nemiah Valley and surrounding areas.
Now, Premier John Horgan and fellow ministers, are on that exact land, in Xeni Gwet’in owned Nemiah Lodge for on-going negotiations.
One of the top items on the agenda for tribal chair, Chief Joe Alphonse, is the over-hunting taking place on their territory, leading to declining moose populations.
Policing, child and family services, and a number of other issues are also being discussed during the meetings.
