A protest broke out at the Terrace City Council meeting last night in response to a petition concerning Ksan’s new damp shelter.
The relocation of the shelter to Elks Hall on Tetrault has many residents in the area feeling uncomfortable.
Several neighbouring businesses such as Fountain Tire and Napa, as well as homeowners, handed in letters to council expressing their worries of theft and safety.
This led to the petition gaining 372 signatures so far according to the presentation given by Kyle De Mederios.
In an effort to support vulnerable people, several attendees of the meeting then stood up to ask questions about safe injection sites, saying that the opposite of addiction is love and connection.
After leaving city hall, demonstrators continued to drum and sing traditionally outside as the meeting continued, while RCMP remained on the scene to monitor the situation.
While the shelter placement falls out of the city’s control due to its’ appropriate zoning, the council hopes to discuss different location possibilities with both Ksan and BC Housing.
