British Columbians are getting ready to honour, celebrate, and contemplate on the second annual Truth and Reconciliation Day this Friday.
Established last year, Canada’s newest stat is a day to recognize and reflect on the impact of the residential school system on Indigenous people, and work toward a brighter future.
But the holiday finds its roots in 2013, when Phyllis Webstad shared a story about wearing an orange shirt on her first day attending residential school.
Ever since then, it has been honoured in a growing capacity every September 30th, as Orange Shirt Day.
In Terrace, a pole raising at the Kermode Friendship Centre will start at 11:00 in the morning, followed by a feast at the Terrace Sportsplex.
At 3:30 in the afternoon, the Tears to Hope Society will be holding a walk from George Little Park to City Hall and back, followed by a barbecue.
Residents are encouraged to wear orange, Every Child Matters, shirts throughout the day to show respect, regardless of their activities.
