BC’s Only Female First Nations Cabinet Member Resigns, Enters Medical Leave

BC’s Tourism Minister, Melanie Mark, will be taking a medical leave, and resigning from her cabinet position.

Premier John Horgan relayed Mark’s decision today, saying that she needs the time to focus on pressing and urgent personal matters.

Minister of Citizens’ Services, Lisa Beare, will take over Mark’s portfolio immediately, in addition to her own.

Mark, who is of Nisga’a, Gitxsan, Cree, and Ojibway descent, was the first First Nations women elected as an MLA, and is the only First Nations woman to hold a cabinet position in BC.
