New supports are on the way for inmates in BC struggling with mental health and substance issues as they look to transition back into society.
Those supports will be delivered by Community Transition Teams in all 10 provincial correctional centres, building on a pilot program offered at 5.
Those five will also see improvements, with expanded capacity and services offered for 90 days after leaving custody, rather than 30.
Each teams will be made up of social workers, nurses, peer support workers and Indigenous patient navigators, who will offer short-term treatment options.
They will also look to connect people with other services, such as psychiatric, clinical, and social support services, when needed.
Added mental health and addictions supports was a leading theme in a recently released provincial report on prolific offenders, which brought forward 28 recommendations.
