Williams Lake RCMP have notified the BC Independent Investigations Office, following the death of a Tŝilhqot’in man in their custody.
On the night of September 30th, officers pulled over and arrested a man and a woman on a moped.
At 4:50 the next morning, the man was found in medical distress and would later pass away, despite life-saving efforts from Emergency Health Services.
Since then, the man has been identified as 21 year-old Yunesit’in resident Surrance Myers, though little information has been made available on what led to his passing.
Now, the IIO will look into the role, if any, that police actions played in his death.
A slew of community members gathered outside the detachment on Sunday for a vigil in honour of Myers.
