Earlier today, it was announced that a first of it’s kind memorandum of understanding was signed by members of the First Nations Climate Initiative.
The members in question that signed on the dotted line are the Haisla Nation, the Nisga’a Nation and the Halfway River First Nation.
This memorandum will see the nations work together to find solutions to the ecological impacts of one Nation’s economic development activities on another Nation’s territories and way of life, which is the first time that this has ever been recognized.
Namely, the Nations are looking at Nature-Based Solutions on Halfway River territory to recover the capacity of ecosystems to support traditional values, while protecting and expanding carbon sinks since Halfway River nation has usually been dealing with the consequences of nearby oil and gas projects.
