With brand new legislation coming to BC, it’s goal will be to enhance patient safety, strengthen the oversight of health regulatory colleges and improve the governance of health professionals.
The Health Professions Act is going to be replaced by the Health Professions and Occupations Act, which will allow for the creation of a new oversight body as well as an independent discipline tribunal and a reformed complaints process that increases accountability and transparency.
Health Minister Adrian Dix officially tabled the act today and it will also look to protect people in vulnerable circumstances, and create a commitment to cultural safety and humility along with a new way to regulate lower-risk health occupations.
The new act was created mainly due to a 2019 report from an international expert that concluded that BC’s health colleges were not focused on patient safety and that their system needed to be overhauled.
