In a news release that was put out today by WorkSafe BC, the company warned that asbestos exposure remains the leading cause of work-related deaths in the Province.
With that fact in mind, WorkSafe BC is doing their best to remind residents that it’s their responsibility to keep workers safe during demolition and renovation projects.
Breathing in asbestos fibres can cause serious health problems including permanent lung damage, lung diseases, and terminal cancer and over the past 10 years, WorkSafeBC has accepted over 1,100 claims for workers who were killed by an occupational disease related to asbestos exposure.
It’s being recommended that homeowners hire a qualified testing company to determine if asbestos will be a problem during a renovation and if it is, a qualified asbestos abatement contractor should be hired to solve it.
