Changes are being made by the Government of BC to advance the production and use of hydrogen, generate economic opportunities, reduce emissions and support the transition to clean energy.
The changes in question will see the BC Oil and Gas Commission be re-established as the British Columbia energy regulator with a modernized board structure and expanded regulator responsibilities, including hydrogen.
Cohesive regulatory framework for hydrogen in BC currently does not exist but this legislation will ensure an experienced single-window regulator provides a one-stop place for industry to get permits as well as a consistent regulatory, safety and compliance authority for hydrogen projects from site planning to restoration in addition to a more comprehensive consultation and engagement approach with Indigenous communities.
Some more amendments will be made in the future to clarify the government’s authority to regulate safe and effective storage of carbon dioxide from any source, which is a small part of a key action in the CleanBC Roadmap to 2030.
