Support from the Provincial Government is being sent the way of proposed changes to the Judicial Review Procedure Act.
The changes have been said to provide transparency and clarity for judicial reviews of decisions made under consent-based decision-making agreements with Indigenous Peoples.
These propositions are a part of BC’s implementation of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, which has made a way for Indigenous Peoples to have full participation in decisions that affect them via agreements with the Province.
So whenever Indigenous governing bodies use their right to either give or deny consent on any given topic, the act’s process will treat that decision in the same way Provincial Government decisions are treated.
The support given towards these changes is being listed as a part of BC’s commitment to advancing reconciliation with Indigenous people.
