A public notification has been sent out by the Prince Rupert City Council, saying that that they have entered into an agreement that will see them sell the lands of Seal Cove to support the construction of 75 market housing units, and then potentially 300 units over a proposed four phased development.
This sale resulted from the city council’s Interim Housing Action Strategy, which was passed last year, in order to allow Prince Rupert to incentivize new development and address their housing crisis by increasing the variety of housing options.
Rupert is also planning to pursue affordable options as the city issued a Request for Expressions of Interest to create a short-list of interested parties in providing community housing development for the area.
And via that process, the City also hopes to be able to apply for funding through the Federal Rapid Housing Initiative, with their specific focus being on affordable housing.
As for how these developments will exactly look, that will be revealed in the City’s Housing Needs Assessment, which is expected to be done by the end of 2022.
