One year after some serious atmospheric flooding took place in southwest BC, a commissioned exclusive poll was created by the Insurance Bureau of Canada via Pollara Strategic Insights.
And in this poll, it was discovered that 88% of the BC residents surveyed believe further action is needed to protect communities against the risk of flooding.
Last year’s floods cost $675 million in insured damage and was considered by some the worst natural disaster in the history of the province.
Since then, IBC has been leading conversations with the federal and other provincial governments on ways to improve the resilience of communities and to better manage the costs of flooding for high-risk residential properties in the country.
BC has also been working on their own Flood Strategy, which will provide a holistic look at flood risk management as well as demonstrate the actions needed to improve land-use planning, enhance flood defence infrastructure, and better use BC’s natural environment to protect communities moving forward.
