NDP Fisheries and Oceans critic Lisa Marie Barron is reminding the Liberals of their promise to end open net fish farms.
This week, the state of Washington officially banned the open pen farms from their coastlines, something many in BC have been calling for for some time.
In April, the courts overturned a 2020 order from then Fisheries Minister Bernadette Jordan which would have closed the farms by this June.
Since then, the Liberals have promised to phase out the farms, but progress has been very slow so far.
Following the announcement by Washington, the shíshálh Nation announced that Grieg Seafood would be removing their farms on the Sunshine Coast.
Now, Barron is once again calling for the government to eliminate all open net farms on the Pacific Coast, and introduce a transition plan for workers.
