Delegates at the BC Federation of Labour’s annual convention have passed a resolution calling for the end of a controversial RCMP unit.
Put forward by the MoveUp Union, the motion urging for the disbanding of the Community-Industry Response Group, passed unanimously.
Created in 2017, the C-IRG is dedicated to addressing energy industry incidents and related public threats and crimes.
But, numerous conflicts with Indigenous land defenders have led to accusations of violent, racially-driven, attacks on Indigenous peoples.
In the resolution, the Federation also calls for C-IRG members to be held accountable for human rights violations, and cease collusion with private security firms.
In addition, the resolution seeks the requirement to have on-sight Indigenous civilian oversight of all RCMP operations on Indigenous lands.
