After nearly three years of work, the entirety of the Xeni Gwet’in First Nation’s Nemiah Valley reserve now has access to power and running water.
Prior to the completion of an expansion project last week, roughly half of those on the reserve had been living without access to the amenities.
Until then, those without were forced to use other sources such as diesel generators, with many homes not even having plumbing or proper wiring.
In March of last year, the Federal government lifted a long-standing drinking water advisory on the reserve, after completing a new UV-Light treatment system.
But, more work, such as plumbing, still needed to be done before the water could reach the far side of the reserve.
In addition to the water, the community will now also have access to a solar power system, with a diesel-powered back-up generator.
