Bulkley River dropping near Houston, still climbing near Smithers

Water levels near Houston are starting to recede as snow feeding the Bulkley River in the basin has melted.

The BC River Forecast Centre says the threat of further increases due to snow melt is reduced, although a flood warning remains for the Bulkley.

Hot weather and heavy snow continue to cause the Bulkley to rise near Smithers. Forecasters say the river could surpass levels seen last week.

The centre has maintained a flood watch for the Nautley River and Nechako River, including tributaries and lake levels around Burns Lake, Francois Lake, Vanderhoof, and surrounding areas. Forecasters say the Nautley has stopped climbing, but it’s expected to stay elevated.

The flood risk for Prince George and the Cariboo is increasing as hot weather and snow melt continue to force the Fraser ever higher.

Officials have issued a flood watch for the Fraser at Prince George down through Quesnel.
