Private charges against Most Polley Mine stayed by the prosecution service

The BC Prosecution Service has directed a stay of proceedings for private charges filed in the wake of the Mount Polley mine tailings dam collapse.

The 14 charges under the Mines Act and Environmental Services Act were filed by Bev Sellars, acting Chief of the Xat’sull First Nation at the time of the 2014 disaster which sent 24 million cubic metres of waste into local waterways in the Likely area.

In a news released issued Tuesday, the BC Prosecution Service says that, after a review of the material provided, it concluded it did not meet the standard for charge approval.

The BCPS says a formal investigation of the Mount Polley Mine tailings dam collapse is still under way.
