A Garden in downtown Prince Rupert that was created via a partnership between EcoTrust Canada and the Metlakatla First Nation, was finally opened to public on September 3rd.
Clarence Nelson, a Gilwilgoots Hereditary Chief, was the one to officially welcome the community to the Sndoyntga Lax Kx’een Maxłaxaała garden by giving a speech to the crowd at the garden, a crowd that included North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice and City Councillor Reid Skelton-Morven.
The garden was created in an effort to give an education to the community on food sustainability as well as creatively using of the vacant lot in the core, which is owned by Metlakatla Development Corporation.
Chief Nelson also stated that the urban garden is going to add to the community’s food security and will also help educate young people on how to grow garden food.
