A new agreement will see the Federal Liberal and NDP parties work together to advance a number of shared interests.
Titled “Delivering for Canadians Now: A Supply and Confidence Agreement”, the agreement will remain in place until parliament rises in June of 2025.
Under the agreement, the pair will focus on seven priority areas: healthcare, general affordability including housing, the climate crisis, job creation and improvement, reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, a fairer tax system, and making voting participation easier.
Some specific highlights include: implementing a federal pathway to address Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, investing in Indigenous housing, launching a dental care program for low-income families, passing a Canadian Pharmacare Act, and more.
An oversight group made up of staff and politicians will also be formed supervise the parties.
Both parties will still be able to oppose and challenge the other, and seek to work with other parties while maintaining their own core values.
Also included in the agreement is a promise by the NDP to not declare a non-confidence vote prior to the agreement expiring in 2025.
